The Pressures of Back-to-School

Back-to-school season is often seen as a fresh start. New year, new me, new possibilities. But for many families experiencing homelessness, there is a hidden layer of pressure. Supply lists can be long, specific, and costly, creating an added burden for parents who are already navigating the daily challenges of homelessness.
Notebooks, crayons, books, backpacks, and other classroom essentials may seem simple on their own, but together can become overwhelming. This is especially true for single parents or parents with multiple school-age children. Like anyone else, these families want to enter the school year feeling prepared, yet the cost of getting there is sometimes out of reach.
Thanks to the generosity of the National Association of Health Services Executives (NAHSE) Chicago Chapter, that load was made a little lighter for Primo families this year. NAHSE volunteers donated and packed backpacks filled with books, supplies, and handwritten notes of encouragement, helping ensure our youth had the tools they needed before stepping into the classroom.
As the backpacks were distributed and filled, they became more than supplies. They represented relief for parents, encouragement for children, and a reminder that no family should have to face the start of a new school year without support.
Moments like this matter because they meet families in a very real place of need. When the practical pressures of back-to-school season are eased, parents can focus more fully on supporting their children, and children can focus more fully on learning, growing, and settling into the year ahead.
We are deeply grateful to all the volunteers who helped make this effort possible. A special thank you to NAHSE President Naomi Tolbert and NAHSE Secretary Jamia Thomas for their commitment to supporting Primo families as they enter this school year!
