In our commitment to end homelessness, we at the Primo Center have sharpened our purpose and our resolve — One Family. One Home — that’s what we’re all about. Simple. Clear. So it’s natural that our most important fundraiser and one of Chicago’s most celebrated social events, The Primo Classico, should also evolve. It will remain the must-attend event on Chicago’s social calendars featuring world-class cuisine, design and style, but it has been infused with a new energy and spirit tied directly to the Center’s sole purpose. We’re speaking in one voice. Determined to achieve one goal. Welcome to The One Gala.  You will not want to miss it.

Faces of Hope

The Winifred P. Primo FACES of HOPE Campaign was launched on Sunday, November 16, 2004 with Afternoon Tea at Neiman Marcus Michigan Avenue’s elegant Mariposa Restaurant. A key focus area of the campaign is to provide homeless children the best opportunities for success in school and life by providing quality childcare and education in the first five years of life. The initiative pays homage to the late Winifred P. Primo’s purpose-driven life.
Please contact Shelley Cooper if you would like to learn more about the campaign, scooper@primocenter.org or 312.385.0565

WINIFRED P. PRIMO
March 28, 1920- December 9, 2013
Winifred Thompson Primo was born March 28, 1920, in the Bahama Islands; soon after, she moved with her family to Florida where she lived for the next two decades. She was an exceptional woman who touched many lives in a positive, educational and spiritual way.
Mrs. Primo graduated as class valedictorian from Carver High School, Delray Beach, Florida. She received a BA degree with highest honors from St. Augustine’s College, North Carolina with graduate work at Columbia University, Wayne State University, and the National College of Education. Mrs. Primo also attended the University of Delaware’s Academy of Lifelong Learning.
While married to the late Rt. Rev. Quintin E. Primo, Jr., Mrs. Primo lived in several communities around the country. Upon her husband’s calling in 1964 to become the vicar and later rector of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Mrs. Primo and her family moved to Wilmington. After being home with her children while they were growing up, Mrs. Primo worked in Wilmington for the Employment Security Commission. They left for Detroit in 1969 where the Primos served another St. Matthew’s Church. “Fr.” Primo was then called to be Bishop Suffragan of the Diocese of Chicago in 1972. Mrs. Primo taught for many years at Washington Elementary School, Harvey IL. One of her former students, Alvin Cheeks shared that Mrs. Primo instilled more than the three Rs. “She taught us to RESPECT ourselves and others and to REACH for the highest potential.”
Mrs. Primo’s volunteer work included being a board member at St. Michael’s Day Nursery, Layton Home and the YWCA; a member of the AAUW’s Garden Club; school PTAs; a lector at The Cathedral Church of St. John’s; and a mentor at Heritage School. Mrs. Primo is most proud to have been associated with the “Summer of Respect” program at St. John’s. She was the Honorary Chair of the Quintin E. Primo, Jr. Lecture Series. Mrs. Primo received many awards for her volunteer work including recognition from the Diocesan Girls’ Friendly Society (GFS), Rochester, NY, and the Amelia Layton Founder’s Award, Wilmington, DE.

Every Lovie Has A Story…

What better day than February 14 for The Lovie Project to launch.

Now in its third year, this brainstorm of Classic Kids Photography turns well-loved toys, from threadbare teddy bears to tattered blankets and even a favorite Matchbox car into works of art. Bring in a new lovie (think stuffed animal or fluffy blanket) to be donated to the Primo Center and get a free photo shoot of your child’s own beloved item. If additional prints are ordered, ten percent of the purchase will benefit the Primo Center. Learn More >

It starts with a playground.

Please join the Primo Center for Women and Children, Motorola Solutions, New Mount Pilgrim Development Corporation and KaBOOM! in building a safe, dream playground for the West Garfield community of Chicago by purchasing a 100% tax deductible 12” x 12” MINI MURAL for $100. Learn More >
